Payment declined: what to do

Common reasons a payment doesn’t go through, and how to fix them

Written by Iren

If your payment didn’t go through, don’t worry. Most declines come from the bank or the browser, not from your Zeely account, and you can usually fix them in a few minutes.

Why a payment can be declined

The most common reasons are:

  • Your bank blocked the transaction. Banks often flag online or international payments as unusual and stop them for security.

  • 3D Secure wasn’t completed. The confirmation step from your bank (a code by SMS or an approval in your banking app) timed out or was skipped.

  • Card limits. Your card has reached its daily or monthly limit for online or international payments, or there isn’t enough money on it.

  • Card restrictions. Some cards, such as certain virtual, prepaid, or debit cards, don’t support online, international, or recurring payments.

  • Incorrect card details. The card number, expiry date, CVV, or billing details don’t match what your bank has on file.

  • VPN or browser issues. A VPN, an ad blocker, or saved browser data can interrupt the payment page.

Try these steps

Go through the checklist below, then try the payment again after each step:

  1. Check your card details. Make sure the card number, expiry date, and CVV are entered correctly and the card hasn’t expired.

  2. Confirm the payment with your bank. When the 3D Secure window opens, approve the payment in your banking app or enter the code from the SMS. Keep the payment page open until the confirmation is complete.

  3. Check your card limits and balance. Make sure there’s enough money on the card and that online and international payments are turned on. You can usually check this in your banking app.

  4. Contact your bank. If the payment still fails, ask your bank whether they blocked it and allow payments to Zeely. Banks can usually tell you the exact reason for a decline.

  5. Turn off your VPN. A VPN can make your location look different from your card’s country, which may cause the bank to decline the payment.

  6. Try another browser or device. Use a different browser (for example, Chrome, Safari, or Firefox) or open the page in incognito mode. You can also turn off ad blockers and other browser extensions.

  7. Use another card. If possible, try a different card, preferably from another bank.

Good to know: If you see a charge on your statement after a declined payment, it’s usually a temporary hold from your bank. It’s released automatically, typically within a few business days, depending on your bank.

Still not working?

If you’ve tried these steps and the payment still fails, contact our Support team at [email protected] or through the in-app chat. We’ll check the decline reason on our side and tell you what to do next, or what to ask your bank.
